How Majestic is Your Name
Scripture:
Psalm 8 (ESV)
1 O Lord,
our Lord,
how majestic is your name
in all the earth!
You have set
your glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have
established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy
and the avenger.
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of
your fingers,
the moon and the
stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man
that you care for him?
5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the
heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory
and honor.
6 You have given him dominion over the works
of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
7 all sheep and oxen,
and also, the beasts
of the field,
8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of
the sea,
whatever passes along
the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord,
our Lord,
how majestic is your
name in all the earth!
Devotion:
Our psalm today is the first hymn of
praise found in the book of Psalms. Too seldom do we pause scrolling on our
social media to just sit back and contemplate the wonder and majesty of God.
David in this psalm does help us to see God’s wonderful creation in all its beauty
and splendor. We are invited to see and experience the joy and pleasure our God
takes in creating beauty and majesty. We are welcomed to praise our God just
like the infants.
Specifically, God invites us to
meditate on the wonder that is the heavens. We see the planets and stars moving
in their prescribed paths and we are moved to exclaim, Glory! We cannot help
but wonder why the God who created all the heavens would bother to care
about humankind. Why O Lord do you care for us? David goes on to answer that
question in verses five through eight.
Humankind is God’s special creation.
He has given us rulership over all the earth. Even though we are made a little
lower than the angels, God has blessed us with incredible blessings. We rule
over all creation from the birds of the air to the fish of the sea and
everything in between. Sinful and fallen as we are, God still blesses us with
glory and honor in his universe. Let us pray this psalm together. Making a
joyful noise of thanksgiving and praise to our wonderful God and Savior. Amen.
