Hearing the Word of the Lord

Who Will Hear the Word of the Lord?

Scripture: Jerimiah 6:10 (NIV)

10 To whom can I speak and give warning?

Who will listen to me?

Their ears are closed

so, they cannot hear.

The word of the Lord is offensive to them;

they find no pleasure in it.

Devotion:

            Our culture today has had warning enough that it is on the wrong track. Recent polling shows an overwhelming majority of people believe this country is on the wrong track. It seems that a deep darkness is settling across our beloved country. You would think that perhaps some at least might turn to the church for a source of light in the descending darkness. But, alas, the people do not see much light in the gospel message as it is preached in our churches. As Jerimiah says their ears are closed and they cannot hear the good news of the gospel no matter how it is preached.

            In our culture the word of the Lord has become truly offensive to many people. The crowds look and can only see themselves judged by what the word has to say by them. Rather than being convicted and come to repentance they hide from the truth of God and follow their own “truth” in the lies that Satan has filled the land with. There are very few who will hear and take heed of the danger we are in and come to repentance. But we must keep reaching out in hopes that some may escape the flames of judgement that await the world at large.

            We should seek to encourage one another as we see the darkness envelope the world. God remains in control. Human beings can do nothing to thwart his plan for the ultimate deliverance of this world from the control of darkness as Matthew writes in 4:16 (ESV)

16  the people dwelling in darkness

have seen a great light,

       and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,

on them a light has dawned.”

                Jesus himself came and preached to the cities of Zebulun and Naphtali, Lands that the Jewish people considered inferior to them. God, however, brought them into salvation just as he had in Judea and Galilee. Even so today God is encouraging us to bring light into the darkest corners of our world. Do not be discouraged if the harvest seems meager. Our Lord is Lord of the harvest and will bring with him a plentiful harvest.

Prayer:

            God you are in control of this world in which we live. We thank you for that. Without the assurance of your sovereignty, we would lose hope and be lost in the darkness like the rest of the world. Help us today to praise you and proclaim your goodness and kindness to a world where evil and warfare too often seem to be in control. Glorify your name through us as we live to be salt and light in a tasteless and darkened world. Glory to you our Lord and our Savior. Amen.
