God Made Us, We Are His

Scripture: Psalm 139:13-14 (NRSV)

13   For it was you who formed my inward parts;

you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14   I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Wonderful are your works;

that I know very well.

Devotion:

            The psalmist is describing for us the growth and development of an unborn child in its mother’s womb. All of us were put together like this. Modern ultrasound technology has shown us magnificent pictures of the growth that takes place out of sight in the womb. Doctors can now see better than ever if there are any problems and, in some cases, treat those problems even before birth. David, the writer of this psalm, is given a vision of what takes place during human growth and development.

            The wonder of pre-natal growth and development is truly something to praise God for. Even though we know so much more about what exactly happens in the womb now than what David knew when he wrote these words our hearts still lift praises to God for new life. We, however, are fortunate that God has seen fit to bless us with our modern technology. In many places in the world today, as in David’s day, the knowledge of human growth and development in the womb is still unknown.

            Humans may change laws on abortion, but God’s view could not be any clearer. There is a human life within that womb. It is alive. It is growing, Unless humans intervene it will be born to take its place in the world. Every life deserves to be celebrated. God intends for us to celebrate each life by loving and cherishing it as much as He does. Let us then work to love each and every child that is brought into this world. Let us support and cherish each mother and father who give birth to these children.

            David continues this psalm by praising God because God has laid out for the child all the things that he/she will do throughout its entire life. Let us join David in praising God. Psalm 139: 15-16. (NRSV)

15      My frame was not hidden from you,

when I was being made in secret,

intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

16   Your eyes beheld my unformed substance.

In your book were written

all the days that were formed for me,

when none of them as yet existed.
