Roe v Wade What Now
Pro-Life: A Victory and a Challenge
Scripture: Matthew 19:13-15 (ESV)
13 Then children were brought to him
that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people,
14 but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them,
for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” 15 And he laid his hands on them and went away.
Meditation:
Today
the Supreme Court of the United States handed down a ruling overturning nearly
50 years of legalized abortion in the United States. Tens of millions of unborn
children lost their lives to this abhorrent practice. It has been a long hard struggle
to get to this place. Yet I am afraid we have more work to do. Arguably harder
more demanding work must begin in earnest. We cannot lay down our weapons and
relax. God has called us to be the church in a way we have not been used to.
You
see while abortion was legal, we could celebrate when some blessed soul saved a
baby through sidewalk counseling or a crises pregnancy center ultrasound. We
celebrated the wins, but we could do nothing for those who were determined to
terminate their pregnancies. The losses were mourned but nothing could be done.
Now,
however, with this change in law those moms in crises pregnancies will need to
be cared for. Someone is going to have to help tens if not hundreds of
thousands of babies that will be born each year into crises situations.
Jesus loved children; Jesus would
not have loved abortion. This is simply an undeniable fact based on scripture. No
where did Jesus ever reject a child that was brought to him. He healed their
illnesses and even raised them from the dead. Jesus put a remarkably high value
on children as we see in this scene from Matthew 18:” At that time the
disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of
heaven?” 2 He called a child, whom he put among them, 3 and
said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become
like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever
becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 Whoever
welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”
When
Jesus walked this earth, it was tough to be a child. Children were routinely
left to die if their parents were not able to take care of them or if they had
some birth defect. But that started to change after Christian people started
picking up and caring for and raising these kids. Just as our forbearers in the
faith did for these poor children in the ancient Roman empire so we must do for
those children who will be born into poverty and deprivation today. The church
must publicly and loudly announce that we are willing to take care of these
thousands of children who will be born because Roe v, Wade is no longer the law
of the land.
The
demise of Roe v Wade and its evil twin Planned Parenthood v. Casey were almost certain
from the moment they were written. Legal scholars on the left and the right
pointed out obvious flaws in the legal reasoning behind these cases. Kudos to
those who fought the good fight and got rid of these unjust and immoral laws. I
must be emphatic about this the battle has been won but we are no where near
the end of the war. What we do for the thousands of babies that will be born as
a result of this decision will be our legacy. I pray it will be one we can be
proud of as a pro-life community.
