You Will Be Saved

Scripture: Romans 10:8-9 NIV

But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Devotion:

In this brief passage, Paul shows the gospel's power and simplicity. Salvation is not some otherworldly out-of-body experience; it is grounded in the reality of confession and faith. Paul intends for all of us to know how to be saved and pleads with us to take Christ up on His offer of free grace by simply believing and confessing Him as Lord of our lives. Paul wants us to have full confidence in the gospel message he proclaims here.

Paul claims that the word of salvation is very near to each one of us. What does this mean? It means that salvation is not some lofty intellectual achievement or some act of bravery. Salvation comes by simply hearing the call of Jesus and responding in faith. There are no hurdles we must clear, no race we must win. Believe and confess, like the thief hanging on the cross next to Jesus; believe. You can find the stories of Jesus in Scripture and hear them preached through the convicting power of the Holy Spirit. God is very near; today is the perfect day to be saved.

Why must we confess with our mouths? We confess because we need to make our identity as a Christ follower public. We cannot fully practice Christianity in solitude. It's not just something you do on a Sunday morning and then forgotten about during the rest of the week. Salvation is a one-time event, procured by Jesus’ death and resurrection. Once we confess that we believe in that salvation, our lives must be dedicated to living in response to that event. Witness and obedience should be the signs that our lives have been changed by the one we now call Lord.

Belief in the heart is a very personal thing. Believing in the resurrection of Jesus, while there is much evidence to support such a belief, is ultimately an act of faith. This faith is not an intellectual exercise; it is a deep personal trust. Belief in the resurrection of Jesus is the central, unalterable pillar of Christianity. This deep faith leads inevitably toward a transformed life, hope, and assurance. But the promise is sure: confess and believe, and you will be saved.

Prayer:

Thank you, Jesus, for providing the way of salvation through your life, death, resurrection, and ascension. You have brought salvation very near to each of us. Deepen our belief in that resurrection. Help us to try to understand the mystery that lies at the heart of all you have done for us. Grant us the courage to confess your name and live our lives as witnesses to your life. Allow us to lead others to you. Amen.
