Be Encouraged and United

Scripture: Colossians 2:2-3 (NIV)

My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Devotions:

Paul writes with a shepherd’s heart in these verses. He longs for believers to be strengthened, encouraged, and united — not by shared preferences or personalities, but by the deep, spiritual bond that comes from knowing Christ. “My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love,” he says. Encouragement and unity are not optional features of the Christian life; they are essential marks of a community shaped by Jesus.

Encouragement in heart is more than emotional comfort. It is the strengthening of the inner life — the confidence that comes from knowing who Christ is and what He has done. A discouraged heart becomes vulnerable to doubt, fear, and division. But a heart encouraged by the truth of the gospel becomes steady, resilient, and hopeful. Paul wants believers to carry that kind of strength within them.

Then he speaks of being “united in love.” Love is the glue of Christian community. It binds believers together in ways doctrine alone cannot. It protects relationships, heals wounds, and guards against the fractures that come from pride or misunderstanding. Unity is not uniformity; it is shared devotion to Christ that makes room for grace, patience, and humility. When believers are united in love, the world sees a glimpse of Christ’s character.

Paul says this unity and encouragement lead to something profound: “the full riches of complete understanding.” Spiritual insight does not grow in isolation; it grows in community. As believers walk together in love, their understanding of Christ deepens. They begin to grasp “the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Every treasure the heart longs for — wisdom for decisions, knowledge for discernment, clarity for life’s questions — is found in Jesus.

This passage reminds us that Christian growth is not a solitary journey. We are meant to walk together, encourage one another, and pursue Christ side by side. Unity strengthens faith. Encouragement fuels perseverance. And together, believers discover the riches found only in Christ.

To be encouraged and united is to live as a community shaped by Jesus — a people whose shared love reveals the One in whom all wisdom and knowledge dwell.

Prayer:

Lord, even as you prayed in the upper room, “that they may be as one.” Help us, Lord, to maintain that unity that you prayed and gave your life for. Encourage us all the more as we see the day of your return approaching. May we live lives of faithful love for one another, leading to the unity that you want for us to have. Amen.
