Jesus is Our Light

Scripture: John 12:46 (NIV)

I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

Devotion:

Darkness in Scripture is never just the absence of physical light. It is the condition of the human heart apart from God—confusion, fear, sin, and the inability to see what is true and good. When Jesus says He has come “as light,” He declares something far more profound than offering guidance. He is revealing that He Himself is the only One who can dispel the darkness that surrounds and fills the human soul.

Jesus does not say that He brings light or teaches light, though He certainly does both. He says He is the light. Light is His identity, His nature, His mission. In Him there is no shadow, no deceit, no hidden motives. Everything about Christ is truth, clarity, and life. When He enters a person’s life, He does not merely illuminate a path; He transforms the heart's entire landscape. Darkness cannot coexist with Him. It must flee.

The remarkable promise in this verse is that whoever believes in Him “may not remain in darkness.” Jesus acknowledges that darkness is our starting point. We are not born into spiritual clarity. We do not naturally understand God, ourselves, or the world rightly. But belief in Christ—trusting Him, receiving Him, submitting to Him—moves us out of that darkness and into His marvelous light. This is not a gradual moral improvement; it is a transfer of kingdoms. We are taken from the realm of confusion and placed into the realm of truth.

Yet even believers sometimes feel the pull of darkness. Fear creeps in. Old habits whisper. Discouragement clouds our vision. Jesus’ words remind us that darkness is no longer our home. We may feel it, but we do not remain in it. His light is stronger than our weakness, clearer than our confusion, and more enduring than our failures. The Christian life is not about generating our own light but continually turning toward the Light who has already come.

Today, reflect on where shadows linger in your heart—places of worry, sin, or uncertainty. Bring them honestly before Christ. His promise is not that we will never face darkness, but that we will never be left in it. He has come so that you may walk in the brightness of His truth, His love, and His presence.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for coming to lead us out of the dark places our sin and rebellion have taken us. Without you, we would be forever lost. Show where any darkness remains and dispel it. Lead us, Jesus, in your well-lit paths. May we reflect the light you show us to those around us, so they may reach out and come to know you as well. Amen.
