Walk By The Spirit
Scripture:
Galatians 5:16 (NIV)
So I say, walk by
the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Devotion:
Walking by the
Spirit is not a mystical experience reserved for the spiritually elite. It is
the daily, deliberate posture of a believer who knows that life in Christ
cannot be lived by human strength. In one sentence, Paul gives both the command
and the promise, the calling and the confidence. The Christian life is not a
tug‑of‑war we are doomed to lose; it is a journey empowered by the very
presence of God.
To walk by the
Spirit means to move through life with a conscious dependence on Him. It is the
opposite of self‑reliance. It is choosing, moment by moment, to lean into the
wisdom, strength, and guidance the Spirit provides. Just as walking is steady,
rhythmic, and intentional, so the life of the believer is meant to be shaped by
continual responsiveness to God. We do not sprint in holiness one day and
collapse the next. We walk—step by step, choice by choice—trusting that the
Spirit is both leading and enabling.
Paul’s promise is
striking: when we walk by the Spirit, we “will not gratify the desires of the
flesh.” He does not say we might resist temptation or that we will occasionally
succeed. He speaks with certainty. The Spirit’s power is stronger than the pull
of sin. The flesh whispers its familiar invitations—anger, pride, lust,
selfishness—but the Spirit provides a deeper desire, a truer strength, and a
clearer path. The believer who walks by the Spirit is not immune to temptation,
but he is no longer enslaved by it.
This walking is
not passive. It requires attentiveness. It means listening for the Spirit’s
conviction when sin tries to disguise itself as comfort. It means yielding when
the Spirit redirects our steps away from harmful patterns. It means embracing
the Spirit’s encouragement when obedience feels costly. Walking by the Spirit
is not merely avoiding sin; it is actively pursuing the life Christ purchased
for us—a life marked by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self‑control. (Gal 5:22-23)
And yet, this walk
is never lonely. The Spirit is not a distant guide shouting instructions from
afar. He is the indwelling presence of God, shaping our desires, strengthening
our will, and reminding us of our identity in Christ. Every step taken by the Spirit
is a step taken with the Spirit.
Prayer:
Lord, be with us
as we seek to walk in your ways. Send your Holy Spirit upon us. Let our lives
bear the fruit of Your Spirit. May Your Spirit be our constant companion as we
walk the journey of our lives. May others see the fruit of the Spirit growing
within us and praise Your name. Thank you for sending the Spirit to us so that
we can walk in Your paths always. Amen.
