Proclaim God’s Name

Scripture: Isaiah12:4-5 (NIV)

In that day you will say: “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world.

Devotion:

In my daily prayer and worship routine, I pray 2-3 times a day by myself in my apartment. On Sundays, however, I pray publicly. It is this public praise that Isaiah is talking about in today’s passage. These words come in a context of a chapter highlighted by joy, salvation, and thanksgiving. Proclaiming God’s name is an act of worship and witness to the glories of our God. Today, I hope to encourage you to speak boldly and publicly about our Awesome God.

To a Christian, praise should be as natural as anything. God has given us so much to be thankful for, and He surrounds us with such beauty; to top all that off, He sent Jesus to provide a way of salvation for us. The verb “give” in Hebrew is imperative; that is, a command for God’s people to do constantly. It’s not a feeling, but an action. Praising God reorients our hearts toward God and our fellow man. It strengthens our faith and lifts our gaze to see the bigger picture of the world. Daily habits of praise, gratitude, and worship help us always to call to mind God’s faithfulness. The simple fact is that prayer readies the heart and mind to witness.

“Proclaim His name.” With these words, Isaiah declares God’s character, faithfulness, and salvation. Our proclamation is our public declaration of God’s importance in our lives. It has been said that you must “walk the talk.” However, without the talk (the proclamation), the walk is just a walk with little content. Practically, the talk should be done through sharing testimonies, speaking of God’s goodness to you, and sharing encouragement from Scripture. We are called as Christians to make known among the nations the glories of our God. You may not have a platform that reaches around the world, but sharing every day where you live is required. Proclamation is the church's mission.

We are called in this passage to sing to the Lord. While not everyone is blessed with a great singing voice, the call is for everyone. We should sing because we have joy in our hearts. We must sing to let the world know of the wonders of our God. Let it be known through our praise: the glorious things God has done for us and for all humankind in the past, present, and what He will do in the future. Proclaim to the world all that God has done for us: salvation, answered prayers, provision, and guidance. Let your joy overflow into relationships and conversations.

Prayer:

Thank you, Lord, for your glorious works and saving grace. May our hearts overflow with gratitude and joy for all the ways you care for us every day. We pray that you may give us opportunities to share your goodness with others so that they may come to know you better. Give us courage to proclaim your name boldly to all the nations. Blessed be the name of the Lord. Amen.
