Walk In Love

Scripture: Ephesians 5:1-2 (NIV)

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children, and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Devotion:

Paul begins this passage with a simple but staggering command: “Follow God’s example.” The NIV renders it plainly, yet the weight of it is immense. We are called to imitate the character of God — not in power, not in authority, but in love. “As dearly loved children,” Paul says. We imitate God not as servants trying to impress Him, but as children who already belong to Him. Our obedience grows out of identity, not insecurity.

Then Paul gives the shape of this imitation: “walk in the way of love.” Love is not an emotion we occasionally feel; it is a path we consistently walk. It is the daily pattern of a life shaped by Christ. Walking in love means choosing compassion when irritation feels easier. It means offering forgiveness when resentment seems justified. It means serving others when self-interest calls louder. Love becomes the rhythm of our steps, the posture of our hearts, and the witness of our lives.

Paul anchors this call in the example of Jesus: “just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Christ’s love was not passive. It was sacrificial, intentional, and costly. He did not love from a distance; He loved by giving Himself. His sacrifice was not only an act of redemption — it was an aroma pleasing to God, a life poured out in obedience and compassion.

To walk in love is to let Christ’s example define our own. It means seeing people through the lens of grace rather than judgment. It means giving ourselves in ways that reflect the heart of Jesus — quietly, generously, faithfully. It means living in such a way that our actions rise before God like a fragrant offering, pleasing to Him because they mirror His Son.

This passage reminds us that love is not optional for the believer. It is the defining mark of those who follow Christ. The world may measure success by achievement, influence, or strength, but Scripture measures it by love — the kind of love that gives, serves, forgives, and endures.

To walk in love is to walk in Christ. It is to let His sacrifice shape our steps, and His compassion shape our hearts. And when we do, our lives become a living testimony to the God we imitate.

Prayer:

Lord, what a call Paul has placed on our lives to walk in the way of God’s own love. Following you by taking up our cross and sacrificing our lives for yours, as you sacrificed for us. We confess we feel too small to love that largely. Strengthen our weak bodies and heal our broken hearts so that we may be able to love others even as you, God in the flesh, loved us. Amen.
