Live Righteously

Scripture: Romans 1:16-17 (NIV)

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

Devotion:

Paul begins with a confession that is both courageous and contagious: “I am not ashamed of the gospel.” He is writing to believers in Rome — the center of power, culture, and influence — yet he declares without hesitation that the gospel is the true power in the world. Not Rome’s armies. Not its emperors. Not its philosophies. The gospel alone “is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” Paul wants the church to stand tall in a world that often misunderstands or dismisses the message of Christ.

To live righteously begins with this same confidence. We do not shrink back from the gospel because it is unfashionable or countercultural. We hold it with joy because it is the only message that saves. It is God’s power, God’s gift, God’s invitation — and it is for everyone. No background, failure, or story places someone beyond the reach of Christ’s saving grace.

Paul then explains why the gospel is so powerful: “For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed.” Righteousness is not something we achieve; it is something God gives. It is His righteousness, not ours. It is His work, not our effort. The gospel reveals a God who makes sinners righteous through faith — a God who justifies, restores, and transforms. This righteousness is not earned by rule-keeping or moral striving. It is received by trusting Jesus.

Paul says this righteousness is revealed “from faith to faith” — meaning the entire Christian life is built on faith from beginning to end. We are saved by faith, sustained by faith, strengthened by faith, and sanctified by faith. Faith is not a moment; it is a way of life. It is the posture of a heart that depends on God rather than itself.

Then Paul quotes the prophet Habakkuk: “The righteous will live by faith.” Righteous living is not rigid living. It is trusting living. It is daily dependence on the God who saves, guides, and empowers. To live righteously is to live with confidence in the gospel, courage in witness, humility in obedience, and steady trust in Christ.

This passage calls us to stand unashamed, to believe boldly, and to live faithfully — because the gospel is still the power of God, and faith is still the way of life for every believer.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, help us to never be ashamed of you. May we proclaim the wonders of your life, death, resurrection, and ascension by which you procured our salvation. You give us righteousness as a result of our faith in you. We confess that we are not worthy of it. Lead us to proclaim the gospel message to all whom we meet and may God grant the increase. Amen.
