Jesus Bore Our Sin

Scripture: 1 Peter 2:24-25 (NIV)

“[Jesus] himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Devotion:

Today’s passage is a clear presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It states that Jesus is the one and only cure for our sin problem. We could never bear to carry the weight of our sins, so Jesus bore them to Calvary. In the same way, Jesus finds us wherever we have wandered and brings us back from the folly of our sin and foolishness.

The passage begins by emphasizing that Jesus and He alone took our sins to the cross. Jesus did not delegate or share in our redemption. The importance of this action of Jesus cannot be overstated. Jesus took responsibility for every wrong desire, word, or action of everyone who ever lived and paid the price that the judgment of God demanded. It was there that the justice of God met the mercy of God through the incarnate God upon that cross.

The cross does more than provide forgiveness for our sins. It transforms us; it restores us into the image of our Creator. Without the cross, we could never be free to follow the way of Christ. First, we die to sin, making a clean break with our past. As the apostle Paul put it, we “become a new creation.” We die that we might live for righteousness. We become supernaturally able to live a life of obedience to Christ that we in our flesh alone could never accomplish. We learn the meaning of grace and move past fear-based obedience.

“By His wounds you have been healed.” Christ’s death on the cross provides His followers with a healing that goes beyond any physical healing. It heals the soul; the deepest interior needs of a person are brought into right relationship with God. It gives not merely emotional comfort, but spiritual restoration of the relationship broken by sin. This healing is not self-generated; it is merely received as a gift.

On our own, we are like sheep, easily confused, lost, and easy pickings for those who would harm us. It is not that we wander out of rebellion, but it is in our nature, tainted by sin, that we wander unless we have a wise shepherd. Fortunately, Jesus came not just to save but to guide us on the path of salvation so that we would be eternally secure in our loving Shepherd’s arms.

To live as sheep redeemed and kept by the Shepherd of our Souls, we must daily return to Him in confession, choosing right paths, trusting Christ's leadership, and remembering that our healing is a process, not a one-time event.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, to save us from our sins. Help us to walk by faith in the path of righteousness. May we live as new creations in this world, proclaiming to all by word and deed the wonder of your love for all your creation. Let us live in the safety of Christ’s shepherding care. Amen.
