Jesus Rejoiced

Scripture: Luke 10:21-22 (NIV)

At that time, Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

Devotion:

In Luke 10:21-22, we find a rare glimpse into the emotional life of Jesus—He is described as being “full of joy through the Holy Spirit.” This joy wells up as He praises His Father for the mysterious, gracious way God reveals truth. Jesus rejoices not because of worldly success or recognition, but because God’s revelation is not limited by human wisdom or intellectual achievement. Instead, it is given freely to “little children,” those who approach Him with humility, openness, and trust.

Often, we find ourselves striving for understanding, longing to be counted among the wise or learned of this world. Yet, Jesus’ words are a gentle reminder that spiritual insight is not earned by merit or intellect, but is a gift graciously given by a loving Father. God delights in revealing Himself to those who are willing to lay down pride and self-sufficiency, embracing the posture of a child—curious, dependent, and eager to receive.

In verse 22, Jesus affirms the unique relationship He shares with the Father, declaring, “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” This statement highlights the profound mystery of God’s nature and the intimacy between Father and Son. It also reminds us that knowing God is not about religious rituals or external performance, but about being invited into relationship—a relationship initiated and sustained by Jesus Himself.

As we meditate on these verses, may we be encouraged to let go of our own expectations and achievements, and instead approach God with the humble faith of a child. Joy is found not in our striving, but in the surprising, generous grace of God who delights to reveal Himself to us. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with the same joy that overflowed in Jesus, trusting that as we seek Him with open hearts, He will graciously reveal more of Himself to us. Today, may our prayer echo the heart of Christ: “Father, thank You for Your wisdom and Your kindness. Help me to receive Your truth with childlike wonder and joy.”

Prayer:

Lord, help us to always rejoice with you. You have joy when your children obey you and do your will. We confess our failure always to follow your will. Lead us in the way we should go, following your will each and every day. May our lives exalt your name and bring you praise and glory. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus, Amen.
