Different Gifts

Romans 12:3-6 (NIV)

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.

Devotion:

Romans 12:3-6a reminds us of the beautiful diversity within the body of Christ and calls us to humility and unity as we use the gifts God has given each of us. Paul encourages the Roman believers—and us today—to resist the temptation to think too highly of ourselves. Instead, we are urged to view ourselves with “sober judgment,” understanding that our abilities, talents, and spiritual gifts are not of our own making, but are graciously distributed by God for the good of all.

This passage uses the analogy of a human body, emphasizing that just as our physical bodies are composed of many parts with unique functions, so too is the church—a spiritual body with many members, each with different gifts. No single part is more valuable than the others; rather, each one is essential for the body to function as God intended. This truth invites us to celebrate the variety of gifts present in our community and to honor the contributions of others, recognizing that every gift—whether teaching, serving, encouraging, giving, leading, or showing mercy—is vital for the health and growth of the whole.

Humility is foundational to living this out. When we acknowledge that our gifts are given by grace, not earned or deserved, we avoid pride and comparison. Instead of elevating ourselves or feeling discouraged by the gifts of others, we can serve joyfully and wholeheartedly, knowing our role is significant in God’s plan. Paul’s words also challenge us to discover and develop our gifts, not for personal glory, but for the benefit of the entire community of faith.

Let us ask God to help us see ourselves and others through His eyes, appreciating the diversity of gifts within the church. May we use our unique abilities to build up one another, work together in harmony, and reflect the unity and love for which Christ prayed. In doing so, we fulfill our calling as one body, united in purpose, and empowered by grace.

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, help us to see others through your eyes. We all have different gifts and skills. May we be gracious in our life together, building one another until we become the beautiful bride. May we await your return for us with patience, bearing all the arrows and taunts of the devil, all the enticements of the world, and the sinful desires of the flesh. Please help us cling to you, our Savior, every day. Amen
