This Is Victory

Scripture: 1 John 5:3-5 

In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 

Devotion: 

One of the most profound assurances in a believer’s journey is knowing that faith in Jesus Christ empowers us to overcome the world. In 1 John 5:3-5, John gives us a clear and uplifting message: loving God is linked inseparably with keeping His commands. Yet, he is quick to assure us that these commands are not burdensome. Why? Because the commands flow from a relationship built on love, not on obligation or fear. 

John continues, “For everyone born of God overcomes the world.” This statement isn’t just a general encouragement—it’s a promise. To be “born of God” means to be spiritually renewed, adopted into His family through faith in Jesus. The victory we have isn’t rooted in our own efforts, strength, or abilities; it’s anchored in Jesus Christ, who has already conquered the world on our behalf. Our faith is the channel through which this victory is experienced daily, in every struggle and temptation. 

Many of us face burdens that feel insurmountable—worries about the future, disappointments, temptations, and the pressures of this world. John reminds us that, as followers of Jesus, we are not left powerless. Instead, the world’s grip is loosened by our trust in Him. Faith is not simply an abstract belief but is lived out as we trust in God’s character, rest in His promises, and obey His commands joyfully. This is the kind of faith that overcomes. 

It’s also important to notice that John defines the “overcomer” specifically as “the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” This belief is not just intellectual assent; it’s a wholehearted trust and surrender that Jesus is who He claims to be and that His work on the cross is sufficient for salvation, hope, and daily victory. In a world that offers many solutions, the true overcomer is the one who clings to Christ above all else. 

Today, let’s reflect on the victory that is ours in Christ. Let’s choose to love God by embracing His commands, knowing they are for our good and His glory. When challenges arise, remember—faith in Jesus is not only the starting point but the pathway to a victorious life. As we walk in faith, we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us. Let this assurance give you strength and joy as you live for Him today. 

Prayer: 

Lord, thank you for the victory we have over the world by believing and following Jesus. Help us to be aware of your constant presence with us, and your unwavering love toward us. Keep us from unbelief and grant us the calm assurance that, through you, all will be well, regardless of how chaotic things may seem in this world.  In Jesus name, Amen.

Depend on Christ
