Have Eternal Life

Scripture: 1 John 5:13 (NIV)

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Devotion:

This verse is a powerful reminder that our faith in Jesus Christ is not just a hope, but a guarantee—an unshakable promise from God Himself. The apostle John wrote these words to strengthen the confidence of early Christians and to encourage them to stand firm in their faith, even in times of uncertainty and doubt.

When life feels unpredictable or burdens seem heavy, it is easy to question our standing with God or wonder if we are truly saved. John addresses this very human tendency by reassuring us that belief in Jesus Christ is the only requirement for eternal life. It’s not about our performance, our perfection, or our ability to measure up; it’s about trusting in the finished work of Christ on the cross. The knowledge that we have eternal life is meant to be a source of deep comfort and peace, dispelling fear and doubt.

Notice that John uses the word “know.” He doesn’t say “hope” or “think,” but “know.” This certainty is not based on our feelings, which can change day to day, but on the unchanging truth of God’s Word. Eternal life is not something we earn or achieve; it is a gift, freely given to those who believe. This confidence allows us to live boldly and generously, knowing our future is secure in God’s hands.

Reflecting on this verse, we are invited to examine the foundation of our faith. Are we resting in Christ alone, or are we trying to add something to His gift? John’s message urges us to lay aside any striving and simply trust. Knowing that we have eternal life enables us to approach God with freedom, joy, and gratitude. It also equips us to face challenges with hope, knowing that nothing can separate us from God’s love.

Today, let the assurance of eternal life fill your heart with peace. Thank God for His promise and take hold of the confidence that comes from faith in Jesus. When doubts arise, return to this verse and remind yourself of the truth written for you: you may know that you have eternal life. Let this certainty shape your perspective, inspire your actions, and deepen your relationship with God.

Prayer:

Lord, we thank you for the assurance that we have eternal life through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Please help us to live that out in our daily lives. May we have complete confidence in you and therefore live lives that show others the glories of our God. Lead us today in the way of holiness and virtue signaling to the world that we are blood-bought children of the Creator God, and we need never be afraid. Amen.
