Jesus, The Bread of Life

Scripture: John 6:35-40 (ESV)

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

Devotion:

In the Gospel of John, Jesus declares, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” This profound statement is the cornerstone of our faith, a promise of spiritual sustenance that endures eternally, providing us with a sense of security in our journey of faith.

Jesus, the Bread of Life, offers Himself as the ultimate source of nourishment for our souls. In a world where physical hunger and thirst can be temporarily satisfied, Jesus provides a feast that satisfies our deepest spiritual longings. He not only offers this divine sustenance but also invites us to partake in it, assuring us that our search for meaning and purpose finds its fulfillment in Him.

The passage continues with Jesus affirming the will of the Father: “that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.” This is a message of hope and security. In Jesus, we are held firmly in the grasp of grace. No one who comes to Him will be cast out, for He is faithful to preserve His people.

Jesus came down from heaven not to do His own will but the will of the One who sent Him. This divine mission, centered on salvation, is a testament to His love and sacrifice for us—ensuring that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him has eternal life. Jesus’ promise to raise us up on the last day is a testament to the resurrection power that lies within our belief in Him.

As we reflect on these verses, let us draw near to Jesus, the Bread of Life. Let us come to Him with our hunger and thirst, our hopes and fears, and find rest in His presence. For in Him, we are promised not just life, but life everlasting—a life that triumphs over death and proclaims the glory of the resurrection.

Prayer:

Lord, we know that you are the bread of life. We can only find spiritual satisfaction in you. Help us to reject the world's offers of fake satisfactions that do not last and do not eternally satisfy our spiritual hunger. Lord, you have declared to us that if we come to you believing in your name, we will not be cast away. We can find eternal security with you. Help us believe this wholeheartedly so we may experience your kingdom's joy. Amen.
