Walk in the Light

Scripture: Proverbs 4:10-19 (NLT)

10 My child, listen to me and do as I say,

and you will have a long, good life.

11 I will teach you wisdom’s ways

and lead you in straight paths.

12 When you walk, you won’t be held back;

when you run, you won’t stumble.

13 Take hold of my instructions; don’t let them go.

Guard them, for they are the key to life.

14 Don’t do as the wicked do,

and don’t follow the path of evildoers.

15 Don’t even think about it; don’t go that way.

Turn away and keep moving.

16 For evil people can’t sleep until they’ve done their evil deed for the day.

They can’t rest until they’ve caused someone to stumble.

17 They eat the food of wickedness

and drink the wine of violence!

18 The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,

which shines ever brighter until the full light of day.

19 But the way of the wicked is like total darkness.

They have no idea what they are stumbling over.

Devotion:

Today’s scripture taken from the book of Proverbs will help us live a good life while avoiding the pitfalls of evil. The teacher of wisdom here (traditionally Solomon) is encouraging his children to listen to his words and follow them. The teacher is encouraging them to walk and even run following his teachings and not be afraid of stumbling. In the end we are told that the child who walks in the ways of righteousness will shine like the noon day sun on a cloudless day.

Those who walk in the way of the wicked meet a different fate. They are dedicated to the doing of evil. They indeed will lack sleep unless they have found a victim for their evil. They have no rest unless they have brought about evil for some innocent person. They eat and drink evil itself. They wind up living in total darkness stumbling over themselves unable to see where they are going.

We are warned not do choose the path of evil in the strongest of terms. We are to flee from the evildoer and run from the wicked paths. We are given a choice each day whether we will follow the evil path that leads to darkness and death or the path of righteousness that leads to light and life.

We must seek to follow Jesus who said these words in John 12:35-36 (ESV) “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” May we seek to follow Jesus our light until we become pure reflections of the light we have found in Christ. Let us be lights shining brightly in this dark, evil, and dangerous world.

Prayer:

Lord teach us to walk in the path your Son left for us to follow that we may find our way to the Celestial City. We pray that the light of Christ will make our path clear and well lit. Keep us from the dark paths that lead to ruin of our souls. Help not even to consider the evil paths knowing the danger that lurks there. May we always run to the light we have in Christ. Amen
