We are Stronger Because of Jesus

Scripture: 1 John 4:4-6 (NIV)

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

Devotion:

In today’s world, it can be difficult to distinguish truth from falsehood. We are constantly bombarded with messages, opinions, and values from every direction—through media, social networks, and even in our daily interactions. Sometimes, it can feel overwhelming to determine what to believe and which voices to trust. Yet, in 1 John 4:4-6, we find both a profound reassurance and a clear call to discernment for those who follow Christ.

The apostle John addresses believers affectionately as “dear children,” reminding us of our identity as God’s beloved. He assures us that we “are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” This is a powerful truth: as children of God, we are not left defenseless or alone. The Holy Spirit, the very presence of God, dwells within us, equipping us to stand firm against the world's influences and pressures.

John contrasts the perspectives of those who belong to God with those who are “from the world.” The world’s viewpoint is shaped by its own desires, philosophies, and priorities—often in direct contradiction to the values of God’s kingdom. The world listens to its own because there is a shared perspective, but as believers, we are called to listen to the voice of God, which may set us apart and even make us misunderstood by others.

This passage emphasizes the importance of discernment. John writes, “We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.” In other words, there are competing spirits at work—one that aligns with God and His truth, and one that promotes deception and confusion. As Christians, we must continually seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to help us recognize what is true and what is false.

So, how do we apply this in our daily lives? First, we can rest in the assurance that the Spirit who lives within us is more powerful than any force, opinion, or ideology that comes against us. We do not have to fear the world or feel helpless when we encounter opposition. Instead, we can stand confident, knowing that our strength comes from the Lord.

Prayer:

Lord, let us move forward in the power and authority of Jesus. May we never be cowed or intimidated for our faith. Be our strength and the rock of our lives. Please help us to stand firm against the forces of the world, the flesh, and the Evil One. Teach us to know and do what is just and right, regardless of our circumstances. May your name be always worshiped by your people, Amen.
