As For Me

Scripture: 1 Samuel 12:23-24 (NIV)

As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.

Devotion:

In 1 Samuel 12:23-24, the prophet Samuel shares a message that deeply resonates with anyone striving to walk faithfully with God: “As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.” These verses show Samuel’s strong commitment to interceding for God’s people and guiding them along the path of righteousness.

Samuel’s words immediately emphasize the vital importance of prayer, not only for ourselves but also for others. He considers neglecting prayer for those around him as a sin against the Lord. This prompts us to reflect on our own prayer habits: Are we purposeful about praying for others? Are we willing to stand in the gap for friends, family, and even those who might have strayed from faith? Prayer is a concrete expression of our love and concern, a way to participate in God’s work in the lives of those we care about.

But Samuel doesn’t stop at prayer. He promises to teach “the way that is good and right.” This highlights our duty to help others grow, share biblical truth, and encourage fellow believers. Each of us is called to be both a learner and a teacher of God’s Word, seeking truth for ourselves and sharing it with those around us. Sharing the gospel, giving wise counsel, and demonstrating Christlike behavior are all ways we fulfill this calling.

The final call in these verses is to “fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart.” Samuel reminds the people—and us—to think about God’s goodness. When we remember the great things He has done, our hearts are moved to worship and serve Him with renewed passion. Service isn’t just an obligation; it’s a genuine response to the grace and mercy we have received.

As we meditate on 1 Samuel 12:23-24, may we be inspired to pray sincerely for others, teach and encourage with honesty, and serve God with all our hearts. Let us always remember the mighty deeds He has performed, letting gratitude drive our faithfulness and devotion each day.

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, may we always remember to lift each other up in prayer. Keep our hearts compassionate toward those experiencing illness, disappointment, or any other trials common to humanity. Bless us to continually praise you for the answered prayers we receive from your hands. Help us to glorify you as our God and Savior. Amen.
