Keep God’s Commands

Scripture: Proverbs 4:3-4 (NIV)

For I, too, was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. Then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live.

Devotion:

Proverbs 4:3-4 offers us a tender glimpse into the wisdom passed down through generations: “For I, too, was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. Then he taught me, and he said to me, ‘Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live.’” These verses remind us that the teachings we receive from our parents and elders are not mere rules, but heartfelt guidance rooted in love and care. Solomon, the author, is reflecting on his own upbringing, acknowledging that even the wisest among us started as children, vulnerable and in need of direction. His father’s counsel was not just about obedience but about cherishing wisdom as a path to an abundant life.

In our fast-paced world, it is easy to overlook the value of wisdom handed down to us, whether through family traditions, community leaders, or the Word of God itself. This passage challenges us to see instruction as a gift, not a burden. When Solomon’s father says, “Take hold of my words with all your heart,” he is urging an embrace that goes beyond mere understanding—a deep internalization of truth. To keep God’s commands means more than following a checklist; it means allowing His wisdom to shape our thoughts, decisions, and relationships, guiding us at every turn.

Often, we might feel tempted to rely solely on our own experiences or instincts. However, Proverbs 4:3-4 gently redirects us: true wisdom is found in receiving and treasuring the guidance of those who care for us, especially the Lord Himself. When we “keep [His] commands,” we are promised life—not just existence, but a life rich in purpose, peace, and direction. As you reflect on these words today, consider the instructions you’ve received throughout your life and the legacy of faith you are part of. Ask God to help you hold onto His teachings with all your heart. Let His commands be a lamp for your feet and a light for your path, confident that this devotion will lead you into a life that flourishes under His loving care.

Prayer:

Lord, help us to be open to your teaching. We confess we often rely on our own thoughts and wisdom instead of yours. Please help us to take hold of your words and let them guide us through life's difficulties and the good times you provide for us. May all we do be a reflection of your love for us. Amen.
