No Escape
Scripture: Hebrews 2:1-3 (NIV)
We must pay the most careful
attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For
since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and
disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we
escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first
announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. The
consequences of neglecting this salvation are grave, and we must not take them
lightly.
Devotion:
One of the greatest dangers for
Christians is drifting away from God's truth and grace. This can happen when we
neglect or ignore what God has revealed to us in his word and through his Son.
The author of Hebrews warns us to pay careful attention to what we have heard
because it is God's message of salvation.
The author contrasts the message of
salvation with the message of the law given through angels. The law was severe
and binding, and those who violated it faced punishment. How much more serious
and urgent is the message of salvation, announced by the Lord Jesus himself,
and confirmed by the eyewitnesses who heard him? How can we escape God's wrath
if we ignore such a great salvation?
The message of salvation is not
something we can take lightly or forget. It is the most important and precious
thing we have. It tells us how God loved us so much that he sent his Son to die
for our sins and rise again for our justification. It tells us how we can be
reconciled to God and have eternal life. It tells us how we can live in
obedience and gratitude to God, following the example and teachings of Jesus.
It tells us how we can have hope and joy amid trials and sufferings, knowing
God is with us and for us.
We must pay careful attention to
this message, and not let it slip away from us. We need to read it, study it,
meditate on it, memorize it, and apply it to our lives. We need to share it with
others, and encourage one another with it. But above all, we must pray for
God's help to keep us faithful and steadfast in his word. Our reliance on God
is crucial in our journey of understanding and applying the message of our
great salvation.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us pay
careful attention to the truth laid out in your word. Let us realize that the
gospel is that we are saved by grace plus nothing else. Let us keep in mind
that the finished work of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection are sufficient
for all our needs. May we be faithful witnesses to this truth in all we say and
do. Amen.
