We’re Called to Love Those Closest to Us

Scripture: Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)

17 A friend loves at all times,

and a brother is born for a time of adversity.

Devotion

This profound proverb holds a universal truth that resonates with all of us. It encapsulates the essence of true love and loyalty, which are not just desirable but essential for our survival and growth as human beings. As social creatures, we thrive in loving, trusting relationships. When we are deprived of these connections, whether by choice or circumstance, we often find ourselves making unwise decisions. In times of adversity, it is this love and support that can provide us with the reassurance and comfort we need.

An essential but unstated truth of this proverb is that just as we need to be loved even in personal crises and adversity, we must be available to love and accompany others in their distress. This requires a level of self-awareness and personal growth. Tragic things often happen when the chain of mutual respect, love, and caring is not maintained. There have been reports of pastors who stated they did not have a single soul to confide their personal struggles. Studies have shown that the same disturbing trend is occurring nationally.

How can we keep the lines of communication open and be good friends to those who count on us? First, we must be available. God often chose those whose qualifications seemed to be that they were available and open to His calling—from Moses at the burning bush to Jesus calling four young fishermen beside the sea of Galilee. God chooses the available person with whom to build significant relationships with. Even so, we must be available to those who count on us and look for people who are available to us to build relationships with. This availability is not just a choice but a responsibility that empowers us to make a difference in others' lives.

The whole world is looking for men and women who make themselves available to God and man to lead us out of the moral decay and corruption we find all around us today. Who among us will God choose to be available for the vital task of calling the world to repentance? Without God’s supernatural aid, none are qualified. God can take the most ordinary person in the world and use them to change the world. He has done this time and time again. Let us pray that God will raise up such a leader soon! This hope for a leader who can guide us to safe waters should inspire us to be more available and open to His calling.

Prayer:

Lord, we are like a ship without a rudder or a captain. This ship represents our collective journey through life; without proper guidance, we risk straying off course. We shall soon crash into the rocky shoals that are all around us unless something is done. Call and send us leaders who are capable and wise to direct the ship on which all humanity sails into safe waters. We confess that we have tried and failed to lead your people properly. Grant that we may be ready to follow you to the safe harbor you have prepared for us in heaven. Amen.
