How Great is Your Law Oh Lord

Scripture: Psalm 19:7-10 (NIV)

The law of the Lord is perfect,

refreshing the soul.

The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,

making wise the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right,

giving joy to the heart.

The commands of the Lord are radiant,

giving light to the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is pure,

enduring forever.

The decrees of the Lord are firm,

and all of them are righteous.

10 They are more precious than gold,

than much pure gold;

they are sweeter than honey,

than honey from the honeycomb.

Devotion:

In this selection of verses from Psalm nineteen, we are given a tribute to the greatness of God’s law. The psalmist (David) uses five synonyms for the word law in this passage. Only in verse ten does he give in and use the third person plural pronoun. Our passage is full of praise and admiration for the laws of God, yet it never is repetitious. The question that comes to mind for the modern Christian reader is, “I thought the law was for the Jewish people? Why does this matter to me today.”

While we live our Christian lives in the promise of Grace through Jesus Christ, we must always be aware of God’s laws. If we truly obey the command of Christ to love God with all our heart, mind, strength, and soul, and our neighbor as ourselves, we will be keeping the law. Still the law is useful for those situations where the loving course of action is not obvious. The law helps us in our Christian walk by giving us guidance for loving God and our neighbor better.

Let us pray to God that we filled with the grace and peace that comes from knowing Jesus may keep the royal law of love.

Prayer:

Lord, we praise you for you are the divine law giver. Forgive us for the times we have forgotten or ignored your statutes. We thank you that your precepts give joy to our hearts at all times. Your commands show us the right path to walk on. The decrees you have provided us serve as help to make us holy and perfect in your sight. Help us, however, to keep our eyes on you the giver of the law and let us not make the law into an idol. Thru your Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit who reign with you one God forever and ever. Amen.
