Stir Up Love
Scripture: Hebrews
10:24 (ESV)
24 And let us
consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.
Devotion:
The writer of Hebrews is giving some
practical advice in this brief teaching. It is meant to direct us in the way of
mutual love and goodness. During my lifetime of church attendance, I can say
that I have been stirred up to love and good deeds by my fellow worshipers only
very seldom. And worse yet I can think of very few times I have been willing
and able to stir up others.
Yet, this teaching is one that we
should be practicing within the church more and more. The culture around us is
very draining on one who tries to live for the Lord. There are more things that
stir us up to anger or apathy than to love and good works. If we are going to be
encouraged in our walk with Christ, the encouragement is going to have to be
from our fellow travelers on the pilgrimage to heaven.
We are advised, in these verses, to
consider how we can do this. It probably will not happen by accident. It must
be thought out and executed as part of a plan to refresh our brothers and
sisters in the faith. With our culture the way it is we will all need someone filled
with the Holy Spirit to help us keep our faith intact. We must consider how we
can do the same for others, so that the church may be energized to do the work
it must do in this broken and hurting world.
Therefore, let us do as this
scripture advises and model love and compassion in all we do and say to our
fellow travelers. We must give as well as receive encouragement. Encouragement
does not have to be some grand act. Encouragement can be a kind word to someone.
Perhaps, a card with some words of encouragement. Any sign that we see the
other person’s value and worth as an image bearer of God will be appreciated.
Let us pray that God will tenderize our hearts so that we will be more willing
to encourage others.
Prayer:
Lord God Almighty, we come to you
this day seeking encouragement from you so that we may encourage one another.
Help us to live as children of yours, being always looking out for ways to
encourage each other. Save us from anger and apathy. Lord, direct our paths in
the ways of peace and love. Grant that we may always be found caring for people.
Amen.
