Shield and Refuge
Scripture: 2 Samuel 22:31 (ESV)
This God—his way is perfect;
the
word of the Lord proves true;
he
is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
Devotion:
This
verse records part of David’s song at the end of 2nd Samuel. He is
praising God for all the times the Lord has delivered him from danger during
his life. His song can be our song too if we will but trust in the Lord. Truly,
all the ways of our God are perfect, and we can trust that he will never lead
us astray. We can trust that the Lord will guide us and bring us safely to
heaven if we will put our complete trust in him.
David
then declares that the word of God is true. We can always rely on what it says.
Though the world may tell us that the Bible is just a book filled with myth and
fables, we know that we can rely on it as a source of truth and guidance. The
Bible contains such deep and abiding truths that have been put to the test over
many thousands of years. The word has never failed those who are willing to
depend on it as a guide to life. Though all the plans of men may fail the word
of the Lord will prevail.
God
is truly a shield and refuge for those who will seek him earnestly. He will not
always keep bad things from happening to us, but he is always with us to guard
our souls and keep us for everlasting life with him. He will be a place of
refuge for us now and for all eternity to come. In that refuge we will always
be protected. We can trust in the Lord to always be with us.
As
we journey through this season of Lent may we seek to draw closer to this God who
seeks us and protects us. May we meditate on this marvelous love that the
Father has for us. He sent his one and only Son to be our Savior and Lord. May
we constantly seek to live behind a shield of faith taking refuge in God as our
strong refuge against the storms that rage in our world.
Let us pray to God to have that
comfort and protection always.
Prayer:
Magnify
the name of the Lord. He is a great God. He is our shield and protector always.
We know that we can trust him. Lord, we know that without you we would be defenseless
against the assaults of this world. Hear our urgent cries for help and deliver
us from the dangers of this world. May we be confident in your word to us that
we will always rely on what you say and not on what the world tells us. May we
never be shaken but always hide our hearts and minds in your care and protection.
Amen.
