Word Made Flesh

Scripture: John 1:14 (NIV)

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Devotion:

The Holy Spirit moved the apostle John to tell about the birth of Jesus in an indirect way. However, it is no less a birth proclamation than we find in Matthew, and Luke. John’s gospel takes our minds off of the stable with its animals and visits from shepherds and wise men. John instead focuses our minds on what God was really doing on that first Christmas.

In the scripture above we are asked to believe that the very God who created the universe and everything in it has stepped out of his glory and has somehow been made flesh in a tiny helpless infant. The Creator God has created himself in human form. The wonder of that sight should hold us in awe and reverence of what God did on that first Christmas so long ago. Jesus came as the exact representation of God and yet somehow mysteriously was fully human. This truth is so hard to believe that throughout the history of the church people have stumbled into heresy over it.

Exactly how God managed this miracle will forever allude us. How the infinite became finite while remaining infinite is beyond the human mind to truly understand. Yet we can enjoy God’s benefit of the precious life of Jesus. Knowing that we will one day be raised into a life like his. Not a divine/human being like him, but rather fully human in a way that we have never experienced before.

Here in John 1:4 (NIV) we read:

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Jesus came to be a light in the world. The world has always been full of darkness. Ever since Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the garden and sin entered the world darkness has reigned. The only way to turn the light back on was for God to come in the flesh and be a light in the darkness for us. In the same way, Jesus now sends us out to be light to our darkened world. There is no time like Christmas for us to shine with the light of our savior. At Christmas time the world is open to seeing the light that we have in Jesus.

Therefore, let us shine the light that we have through Jesus to brighten our darkened world. Let us show forth the love and peace we have experienced in our hate filled and peaceless world. Let us proclaim with all our strength that our God reigns over all the world today.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we praise you because you showed that you are a God who is on our side by becoming flesh and living among us. The great love which you showed for us is indeed awe inspiring. Help us to reach out to those who still live in darkness with the light that you provide for us. May we raise our voices in the worship of you in this season of incredible joy. Amen.
