Search Me
Scripture:
Psalm 139:23-24 (NLT)
23 Search me, O God,
and know my heart;
test me and know
my anxious thoughts.
24 Point out anything
in me that offends you,
and lead me along
the path of everlasting life.
Devotion:
The prayer given here by the
psalmist David is a dangerous one to pray. You are asking a holy and powerful
God to examine your whole life and make the corrections as He sees fit. If one
is at all self-aware of how sinful and weak one is spiritually inviting this
kind of thorough inspection is dangerous. However, our God is trustworthy and usually
gentle in his correction of His wayward sheep. Therefore, inviting God to
search us should not intimidate us. Indeed, God loves us so much that we can be
assured that whatever correction He makes will be only for making us into
better Christians.
This prayer touches us in sensitive
places. First it invites God to examine our very heart. The heart is the most
sensitive part of the human soul. Yet God is an excellent heart surgeon who is
competent to open up our hearts to receive the spiritual nourishment that our
hearts need. We can rest assured that God will do what is best for our hearts.
We then invite God to search our
minds and emotions. We ask Him to point out areas where we are anxious and
unsettled. We know that Jesus preached that we should not be anxious about
anything but in everything rely on God. We can trust the divine neurosurgeon to
operate on our minds bringing them into conformity with His will. God must
align our thoughts and emotions with his in order to bring us peace
Finally, we ask God to deal with our
sins. We all have them there is no escaping this reality. There is, as the
scriptures say no one righteous no not one. God has already dealt with our sins
by having His son to die for them. We must allow God to apply the salvation won
on the cross to our lives so that we can actually walk in an intimate
relationship with Him.
Once God has searched us and we have
allowed Him to fix our broken bodies and souls. We ask for Him to then lead us on
the narrow and difficult road that leads to eternal life with Him. We can trust
God to walk beside us to assist us when the way is steep and covered with rocks
that are the temptations of the Devil, our own flesh and the world system.
Yes, this prayer is dangerous. It
invites God into our lives in a very personal way. However, this prayer is most
dangerous to the Devil and his army. A Christian whose life is surrendered to
God in this way will be fatal to the enemies plan to disrupt their lives. Let
us pray that God will be with us.
Prayer:
Holy God, we ask you to examine us
and show us where we are failing to be the humans you with for us to be. Lead
us toward heaven and perfect us by your mighty Holy Spirit. Help us to be the
kind of people that you want us to be. May we be open in heart, mind, and soul
to your will for our lives. To you God may we be faithful servants of you and
your world. Amen.
