When I Called
Scripture: Psalm
138:3 (NIV)
When I called, you
answered me;
you greatly
emboldened me.
Devotion:
There are moments
in every believer’s life when calling on God is not a polished act of worship
but a cry rising out of need. David knew those moments well. Psalm 138:3
captures one of them with striking simplicity: It is a testimony, a reminder,
and an invitation all at once.
David does not say
that God merely heard him. He says God answered him. The difference
matters. Hearing acknowledges the sound; answering acknowledges the heart. God
does not simply register our cries as background noise. He responds. He
engages. He moves toward us with intention. When David called, God acted.
And the answer God
gave was not always a change in circumstances. Sometimes the answer was
strength — not around David, but within him. This is the kind of
strength that does not depend on outward stability. It is the kind of strength
that rises in the middle of uncertainty, fear, or pressure. It is the quiet
reinforcement of the inner life, the steadying of the heart, the strengthening
of resolve. God’s answer often begins inside us before it unfolds around us.
This verse reminds
us that calling on God is not a last resort; it is a lifeline. It is the act of
turning toward the One who already knows, already sees, already cares. When we
call, we are not trying to get God’s attention — we are stepping into His presence.
And His presence brings strength.
David’s experience
also teaches us that God’s response is personal. He does not offer generic
comfort. He gives soul-strength — the exact kind of reinforcement needed for
the moment at hand. Sometimes that strength looks like courage. Sometimes it
looks like peace. Sometimes it looks like clarity, patience, endurance, or
hope. But it is always enough.
“When I called” is
not just David’s story; it becomes ours. Every believer can look back on
moments when God answered in ways unexpected yet unmistakable. And every
believer can look forward with confidence, knowing that the God who
strengthened David’s soul is the same God who strengthens ours.
Calling on God is
not weakness. It is faith. It is trust. It is the recognition that the One who
answers is the One who sustains. And He still strengthens souls today.
Prayer:
O God, thank you
for the assurance of your answer to our cries. Teach us patience because you do
not always answer as quickly as we would like, but you always answer. It is you
alone that our souls need and long for. We seek good from no one else but you.
May we always seek and find our comfort and solace in your arms. Amen.
