The Glory of the Lord

Scripture: Exodus 40:34=35 (NIV)

Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

Devotion:

There are moments in the biblical story when heaven seems to lean so close that the boundary between the divine and the human becomes almost visible. Exodus 40:34–35 describes one of those moments. After months of instruction, obedience, craftsmanship, sacrifice, and waiting, the tabernacle finally stood complete. It was the place God had chosen to dwell among His people. And then it happened: “A cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.” What had been ordinary materials — wood, gold, linen, oil — suddenly became the meeting place of God’s presence.

The glory of the Lord did not simply rest near the tabernacle; it filled it. Every space, every corner, every part was overwhelmed by the weight of His presence. Moses, who had spoken with God on the mountain, who had entered the cloud before, who had stood in the place where God revealed His name, could not enter. The presence of God was too full, too holy, too overwhelming. It was a reminder that God is not merely near His people — He is holy among them.

This moment teaches us something essential about God’s character. He is not distant. He is not indifferent. He is not content to watch His people from afar. He chooses to dwell with them. The tabernacle was not built so Israel could admire a sacred structure; it was built so God could live in the midst of their camp. His glory filling the tabernacle was His declaration: I am here. I am with you. I will lead you.

The cloud that filled the tabernacle would become the guiding presence for Israel. When it lifted, they moved. When it remained, they stayed. Their rhythm was shaped not by their own plans but by the presence of God. His glory was not only a display of holiness; it was a sign of guidance, protection, and relationship.

For believers today, this passage is a reminder that God still fills what is surrendered to Him. He fills hearts that make room for Him. He fills lives that are shaped by obedience. He fills communities that seek His presence above all else. And when He fills, He leads. His glory is not merely a sight to behold; it is a presence that transforms.

The glory of the Lord is not a distant memory. It is the promise of a God who still dwells with His people.

Prayer:

Lord, as you were with the people of Israel in a cloud of glory. You are with us today. What was impenetrable holiness has been made manifest in Jesus and the Holy Spirit. You seek to fill each and every believer today with your glory. Help us to be willing vessels for your Spirit at all times that we may make your glory known on the earth. Forgive us our sin and self-centeredness and open us to be full of your love and holiness on earth. Amen.
