Believe In Jesus!

Scripture: 1 John 5:13-15 (NIV)

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Devotion:

John writes these words with unmistakable purpose: he wants believers to know they have eternal life. Not hope, not guess, not wonder — know. The gospel is not a vague promise; it is a solid foundation. “These things have I written unto you… that ye may know that you have eternal life.” Assurance is not arrogance; it is the birthright of everyone who believes in Jesus Christ.

John’s message is unapologetically clear: eternal life is found in Christ alone, not in good works, not in religious effort, not in moral improvement. It is found in believing the Son of God — trusting His sacrifice, receiving His grace, resting in His finished work. Faith in Jesus is not one option among many; it is the only path to life. And John wants his readers to stand on that truth without hesitation.

But he does not stop at assurance of salvation. He moves immediately to confidence in prayer. “And this is the confidence that we have in him.” The same Jesus who saves is the Jesus who hears. The God who gives eternal life also invites His people to come boldly before Him. Prayer is not a ritual; it is a privilege purchased by Christ’s blood.

John says that if we ask anything “according to his will,” God hears us — and if He hears us, we can be certain He will act. This is not a promise of getting everything we want; it is a promise that God responds to every prayer aligned with His heart. The believer who trusts Christ for salvation can also trust Him for guidance, strength, provision, and help.

This passage carries an evangelistic urgency. If eternal life is found in Christ alone, then every person must face the question: Do I believe in the Son of God? John writes so that hearts will be awakened, doubts silenced, and faith stirred. He wants the reader to step out of uncertainty and into the confident, joyful assurance that comes from trusting Jesus.

To believe in Jesus is to receive life — real life, eternal life, life that begins now and continues forever. And to those who believe, God opens the door of prayer and says, “Come with confidence.” The gospel offers no halfway promises. It offers Christ — and in Him, everything we need.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for saving us. Thank you for providing us with the ability to know beyond a doubt that we are saved. Help us to reach out to you as our Savior, knowing that you love us and gave your life for us. Lead us to be constantly in prayer with you. Help us to know that you will answer our requests as gladly as you receive our thanksgiving and praise. Amen.
