Scripture: Deuteronomy 30:19-20 (NIV)

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Devotion:

These verses stand like a crossroads in the life of God’s people. After reminding Israel of His faithfulness, His commands, and His promises, the Lord places a choice before them: life or death, blessing or cursing. It is not a theoretical decision. It is a real, present, urgent call. “Therefore, choose life.” God does not hide His desire. He wants His people to live — truly live — in fellowship with Him.

Choosing life is not merely selecting the better option; it is choosing the better relationship. “That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him.” Life is found in loving God, listening to Him, and holding fast to Him. These are not burdens; they are the pathways of blessing. God is not calling His people to cold obedience but to a warm, committed relationship in which His voice guides and His presence sustains.

The command to choose life also reveals something about the human heart: we drift unless we decide. Israel had seen miracles, deliverance, provision, and mercy, yet God still calls them to choose. Faithfulness is not automatic. It requires intention. It requires clarity. It requires a heart that says, “Today, I will walk with God.”

God grounds this choice in His identity: “for he is your life, and the length of your days.” Life is not found in circumstances, achievements, or security. Life is found in God Himself. He is the source, the sustainer, and the goal of all true life. To choose Him is to choose the only One who can give meaning, hope, and strength.

These verses also remind us that choosing life affects more than ourselves. “That thou mayest dwell in the land… to thy fathers.” Our choices ripple outward. They shape families, communities, and futures. Choosing God today plants seeds that bear fruit tomorrow.

Every believer faces this same crossroads. Not once, but continually. Each day brings the invitation: choose life. Choose obedience. Choose trust. Choose closeness with God. Choose the path that leads to blessing, strength, and joy. God’s call is as clear now as it was then. He sets life before us — and He urges us to choose it.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, as you presented the choice between death and life to the people of Israel at the entrance to the promised land, so you present us with a life and death decision of following or rejecting Jesus. Help us to choose wisely and to choose today. May we do all things for your glory. Amen.
