Judgment Is the Lord's
Scripture: 1
Corinthians 4:5 (NIV)
Therefore, judge
nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to
light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At
that time each will receive their praise from God.
Devotion:
Paul’s words in
this verse remind us of something we often forget: our perspective is limited,
but God’s is perfect. We see fragments of people’s lives, moments of their
behavior, glimpses of their motives. God sees the whole story. He sees the
hidden places of the heart, the quiet intentions, the unseen struggles, and the
secret faithfulness. Because of this, Paul urges us to resist the impulse to
judge prematurely. Judgment belongs to the Lord alone.
“Therefore, judge
nothing before the time.” This is not a call to abandon discernment; it is a
call to humility. We do not know enough to render final verdicts. We do not see
deeply enough to weigh motives. We do not understand fully enough to declare
outcomes. Only God can do that, and He will — in His time, not ours.
Paul anchors this
truth in the coming of Christ. When the Lord returns, He will “bring to light
the hidden things of darkness” and “make manifest the counsels of the hearts.”
Nothing will remain concealed. Nothing will be misunderstood. Nothing will be misjudged.
God will reveal what was true all along, and His judgment will be perfectly
just.
This frees us. It
frees us from the burden of trying to evaluate everyone’s motives. It frees us
from the temptation to assume we know the whole story. It frees us from the
pressure to defend ourselves against every misunderstanding. It frees us from
the fear of being unseen or misjudged. God sees. God knows. God will reveal.
And Paul ends with
a surprising promise: “Then shall every man have praise of God.” The final word
over God’s people is not condemnation but affirmation. The Lord will highlight
what was faithful, what was sincere, what was done in quiet obedience. His judgment
will not crush the righteous; it will honor them.
This verse invites
us to rest in God’s timing, trust His justice, and release our need to control
how others perceive us. Judgment is the Lord’s — and that is good news.
Prayer:
Lord, help us to
resist pronouncing final verdicts on the motives and acts of one another. May
we be willing to let our brothers and sisters stand or fall before their Maker
without our input. Let all of us seek the best for our friends and neighbors.
May you receive only praise and thanksgiving from us. Help us to be patient and
kind to those who do not behave in the way we would like, knowing that they are
ultimately accountable only to you. Amen.
