Be Full of Joy and Peace

Scripture: Romans 15:13 (NIV)

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Devotion:

Paul’s prayer in Romans 15:13 is one of the most beautiful benedictions in the New Testament, and it comes at the end of a section where he has been urging believers toward unity, endurance, and encouragement. It’s striking that Paul doesn’t simply tell the church to be hopeful — he points them to the God of hope. Hope isn’t something we manufacture; it’s something God gives.

Paul begins with a request: “May the God of hope fill you…” The language is intentional. Hope isn’t sprinkled; it’s poured. God doesn’t give His people a small measure of encouragement to help them limp through the week. He fills. He saturates. He overflows. And He fills us not with vague optimism but with joy and peace in believing. Joy and peace are not emotions we chase; they are fruits that grow when our hearts rest in Christ.

Notice the phrase “in believing.” Joy and peace are tied to trust. When our faith is thin, our joy becomes fragile, and our peace evaporates quickly. But when we actively trust God — when we believe His promises, rely on His character, and anchor ourselves in His Word — joy and peace begin to rise. They are not the reward for perfect faith, but the gift God gives to those who keep turning toward Him.

Paul then adds a purpose clause: “so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Hope is not sustained by personality, discipline, or circumstances. The Spirit sustains it. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is the One who keeps hope alive in us. He takes the truth we believe and breathes life into it. He strengthens weary hearts. He lifts our eyes when circumstances pull them down. He makes hope more than a doctrine — He makes it a lived reality.

And Paul doesn’t pray that we would simply have hope. He prays that we would abound in it. Overflow with it. Carry it into conversations, decisions, and seasons of uncertainty. Abounding hope is not loud or flashy; it’s steady, resilient, and rooted in the God who never changes.

Romans 15:13 reminds us that Christian hope is not wishful thinking. It is Spirit‑empowered confidence in a God who fills His people with joy, peace, and endurance. When we trust Him, hope doesn’t just survive — it grows.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for all you have done for us so that we can live lives of joy, peace, and endurance. Help us to share these things with others so that we will be known as joyful and peaceful people. Give us the endurance to endure trials. Help us have a faith strong enough to give us assurance and hope for the future, no matter what we face in this life. May we be joyful and hopeful at all times. Amen.
