The Golden Rule

Scripture: Luke 6:31 (NIV)

Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Devotion:

The Golden Rule stands as one of Jesus’ most beautifully simple yet deeply challenging commands. It is easy to admire these words, harder to embody them, and essential for anyone who desires to walk faithfully with Christ. In a world marked by impatience, division, and self‑protection, Jesus calls His people to a different way—a way shaped by empathy, humility, and intentional kindness. The Golden Rule is not merely a moral guideline; it is a reflection of God’s heart, inviting us to treat others with the same grace we ourselves depend on every day.

Many other religious systems express something like the Golden Rule as Jesus did here. Jesus is the only one who expresses it as a positive command. It is rooted in the Father's goodness and expresses what a good God desires for His people. The command is not complicated, yet we find it difficult to live out in our daily lives. The rule causes us to search our hearts and confess that we often do not live up to its demands. It leads us to live a different sort of life. One that is slower and more intentional, really noticing others and responding to their needs.

The rule leads us to be more compassionate with others. Seeking their good rather than our own advantage. Once we slow down and practice this rule, we will find ourselves becoming kinder and gentler people. When we move more slowly in our fast-paced world, we will be able to notice that the image of God is stamped on every person and treat them accordingly. However, we will struggle with slowing down. We live in a fast-paced world that demands instant gratification of every desire. We must be intentional and mindful to do this.

Another difficulty we face is that other people can be hard to love and to treat with the respect they deserve as persons who are made in the image of God. Sometimes we may not feel up to the task because of personal reasons. We just aren’t feeling good enough, yet this is exactly when our obedience to this rule is commanded. I know I often withdraw and hide out at home when I don’t feel like being around other people. Sometimes I retaliate when offended. The rule challenges me to be better.

Obeying the Golden Rule is a mark of spiritual maturity. The more we obey it, the better our lives and the lives of those closest to us will be. The rule practiced in church affairs is a positive thing. A church dedicated to being under the rule will be known as a place that is safe and welcoming. We must encourage others around us to practice and teach the rule to all that they come into contact with.

Prayer:

Lord, fill us with your Spirit so that we will be marked by compassion and obedience to the Golden Rule. Give us the strength to love others well. Slow us down and help us to act as sons and daughters of God, treating others well and honoring your name. May we commit today to walking by this rule and ordering our lives accordingly. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
