One Mediator

Scripture: 1 Timothy 4:14-16 (NIV)

This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.

Devotion:

Paul, in today’s passage, calls attention to the fact that Jesus is the only way of salvation for humankind. In today’s world, this is a very controversial position to hold. Yet, hold it we must. What God has decreed in His word must be true regardless of whether it is fashionable or liberal enough for the non-Christian world. Jesus, Himself, said in the gospel of John, that He “was the way, the truth, and the life.” No other person has made that claim, let alone been raised from the dead to verify it.

God wants all people to be saved. God knows that some will, because He wants to be loved freely, ultimately reject His love and perish. In His mercy, He has provided a way of salvation through His son, Jesus. All people have access to this salvation, whether or not they have ever heard the gospel of Jesus preached. God has made His presence obvious through His creation and has provided salvation based on that alone if, for some reason, hearing the gospel is impossible.

We are so fortunate to be able to hear and respond to God’s offer of salvation through Jesus Christ. Those who knew God in the olden times had to trust in God without the confirmation of what was promised through the law and the prophets. God led them to Himself because He is a loving God, truly willing that none should perish without understanding His great salvation. Let us rejoice that the Creator of the universe is not a distant and uninvolved God, but one who seeks the good of His creation at all times and in all ways.

Jesus is given to us as the way of salvation in these New Testament days. We can rely on the promise given in this scripture that trust in Him will be rewarded. God, at a time in the future, will put all creation right. As we wait for the ultimate transformation, we can trust in Jesus as the way to be saved and made right with the Father. The Holy Spirit will be given to all who come to Jesus as a down payment of our future redemption. Let us pray to the Lord for the patience to wait until the final redemption of creation.

Prayer:

Lord God Almighty, we are in awe of you. As if creating this universe were not enough, you seek the good of that creation. We look to Jesus as our salvation, and we are assured that you will keep us in your will until the time of your ultimate redemption. Come quickly, Lord. We await the ultimate rescue of our souls in your time. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
