A Living Hope
Scripture: 1 Peter
1:3 (NIV)
Praise be to the
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy, he has given us
new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade.
Devotion:
Peter, in this
verse, proclaims the source of our hope in this life. That Jesus not only died
to take the guilt and stain of our sin away, but that He was raised to new and
everlasting life in heaven with the Father.
Here, Peter, the
apostle, lifts our eyes to the very heart of the Christian faith. He blesses
God not out of habit or ritual, but because something has happened—something so
decisive, so world‑altering, that nothing can ever be the same again. God, in
His great mercy, has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Peter wants us to understand that
our hope is not built on sentiment or wishful thinking. It is anchored in an event
that took place in real history, in a garden outside Jerusalem, when the
crucified Lord stepped out of the tomb alive forevermore.
Peter knew
firsthand what it meant to fail, to despair, and to feel as though hope had
slipped through his fingers. He had denied Jesus. He had watched the One he
loved die. He had tasted the bitterness of regret. But he also knew what it
meant to be restored by the risen Christ. When Jesus rose, Peter’s world was
remade. The resurrection did not simply comfort him; it recreated him. It gave
him a new identity, a new future, and a new mission. That is why he speaks of
being “born again.” The resurrection is not merely a doctrine to affirm; it is
the power that brings new life into the hearts of those who trust in Christ.
This living hope
Peter describes is not fragile. It does not fade with time or crumble under
pressure. It is living because Christ Himself is living. It is hope that
breathes, hope that endures, hope that sustains us through trials, griefs, and
uncertainties. Peter writes these words to believers who were suffering,
reminding them that their hope is not tied to their circumstances but to their
Savior. The resurrection guarantees that no suffering is final, no darkness is
permanent, and no grave has the last word.
Prayer:
Father, thank you
for raising Jesus from the dead to live forevermore with you in paradise. We
rejoice in what you have done for us. We can live with confidence that nothing,
not even death, will be able to separate us from you in the end. With that
faith in you, Lord, we move forward to serve you wherever you lead us. We thank
you that nothing can ever take away your love for us. In Jesus name we pray,
Amen.
