Who Can Handle Your Anxiety?

Scripture: 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Devotion:

The verse under consideration today offers one of the most tender invitations in all of Scripture: “casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.” Though brief, it carries the weight of a lifetime of discipleship. Peter does not simply tell believers to stop worrying or suppress their fears. Instead, he directs them to a Person—the God who sees, knows, and loves His people with unwavering faithfulness. The call to cast our anxieties on Him is not a command rooted in shame or rebuke; it is an invitation grounded in the character of God Himself.

To cast something is to deliberately place it elsewhere, to take what burdens us and transfer it to another. Peter’s language implies intentionality. Anxiety does not drift away on its own. It must be handed over. Yet the beauty of this verse is that God does not demand strength from us before we come. He does not require us to tidy our emotions or present ourselves as untroubled. He invites us to bring the very things that weigh us down—the fears we cannot name, the pressures we cannot carry, the uncertainties that cloud our minds. He welcomes the burdens that feel too heavy and those we think are too small. Nothing is excluded from His care.

The reason we can cast our anxieties on Him is simple and profound: He cares for us. This is not a distant concern or abstract compassion. It is personal, attentive, covenantal care. The God who created the universe bends His ear to the cries of His children. He is not indifferent to our struggles. He is not irritated by our weakness. He is not surprised by our fears. His care is steady when our hearts are restless, and His faithfulness endures when our strength fails. Peter writes to believers who were suffering, misunderstood, and under pressure. He reminds them that God’s care is not diminished by hardship. In fact, it is often in hardship that His care becomes most evident.

Casting our anxieties on Him is an act of trust. It is a confession that He is strong enough to carry what we cannot. It is a declaration that His love is deeper than our fear and His wisdom greater than our confusion. It is a surrender that frees the heart from the illusion of self-sufficiency. When we cast our anxieties on Him, we are not losing control; we are placing our lives in the hands of the One who has always held them.

In this simple verse, Peter invites us into a rhythm of daily surrender. Each worry becomes an opportunity to remember God’s care. Each fear becomes a doorway to deeper trust. Each burden becomes a reminder that we are not alone. The God who cares for us invites us to come, to cast, and to rest in His unfailing love.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, you know that we are an anxious people. We try, and try to handle all of life’s challenges on our own. Lord, teach us to rely on you fully and completely because we know that you care for us deeply. May we learn to live less anxious lives. Amen.
