Light Your World
Scripture: Matthew
5:14:16 (NIV)
“You are the light
of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light
a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives
light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before
others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Devotion:
This passage
presents one of the most vivid and compelling images Jesus gives His disciples.
He tells them, “You are the light of the world.” This is not merely a
description; it is a calling. Light is meant to be seen. It reveals what is
hidden, guides those who are lost, and brings comfort to those who sit in
darkness. When Jesus speaks these words, He is not offering a suggestion about
what believers might become someday. He is declaring what they already are
because they belong to Him. The One who is the Light of the world shares His
light with His people so they may shine in a world desperate for truth, hope,
and grace.
Jesus continues by
saying that a city set on a hill cannot be hidden. In ancient times, a city on
a hill was visible for miles, especially at night when lamps glowed from its
homes and streets. Its elevation made concealment impossible. In the same way,
a believer’s life is meant to stand out—not through self-promotion or pride,
but through the unmistakable presence of Christ’s character. When the Spirit
shapes a heart toward humility, purity, mercy, and love, that life becomes a
beacon. The world may not always understand it, but it cannot ignore it.
Christ’s work in His people is meant to be seen.
Jesus then offers
the simple image of a lamp set on a stand rather than hidden under a basket.
Lamps were small, yet even a small flame could fill a room with light. Jesus
reminds us that no act of obedience is insignificant, no expression of love too
small, and no moment of faithfulness wasted. When believers live openly for
Christ—forgiving, serving, speaking the truth, showing compassion, and walking
in integrity—their light shines. God uses ordinary faithfulness to illuminate
hearts and draw people toward Himself.
Finally, Jesus
gives the purpose of this shining: “that they may see your good works and give
glory to your Father who is in heaven.” The goal of the Christian life is not
personal recognition but divine glory. When others see Christ’s light in us,
the praise does not belong to us but to God, who transforms sinners into saints
and fills them with His radiance. Our lives become windows through which others
glimpse God’s beauty.
Prayer:
Lord, help us to
realize that we are the light of the world if we belong to you. Let all our
words and actions be such that the world sees you plainly. Help us to attract
those who don’t know you into your most holy faith. May our lives always
glorify you. May the light we shine be bright and clear. In Jesus name, Amen.
