Be Wise
Psalm 111:10 (NIV)
The fear of the
Lord is the beginning of wisdom; All who follow his precepts have a good
understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.
Devotion:
With these words,
the psalmist reminds us that true wisdom does not begin with human insight,
intellectual achievement, or life experience. It begins with God Himself.
Wisdom is not something we discover apart from Him; rather, it is something we
receive as we learn to revere, trust, and submit to Him.
In Scripture, the
fear of the Lord is not terror or dread but a posture of awe-filled reverence.
It means recognizing God as holy, sovereign, and infinitely worthy. It means
acknowledging that He is God and we are not. This reverence shapes how we
think, choose, and live. When the psalmist says that the fear of the Lord is
the beginning of wisdom, he is telling us that every wise decision, every
righteous path, and every understanding of truth flows from a heart rightly
oriented toward God. Without this foundation, even the most brilliant mind
lacks true understanding, for wisdom is not merely knowledge but the ability to
live in harmony with God’s will.
The verse
continues, saying that those who practice this fear—those who live out their
reverence through obedience—have a good understanding. Wisdom is not gained by
hearing alone but by doing. It is formed through daily choices to trust God’s
Word, walk in His ways, and submit to His guidance. Understanding grows as
obedience deepens. The one who fears the Lord does not merely admire His commands
but embraces them as the path to life. In this way, wisdom becomes a lived
reality rather than an abstract concept.
The psalm closes
with the declaration that God’s praise endures forever. This final line ties
wisdom to worship. The wise person is the worshiper, and the worshiper is the
one who sees God rightly. Praise is the natural response of a heart that
recognizes God’s greatness and goodness. It is the overflow of wisdom, for
wisdom leads us to delight in the One who is worthy of all honor.
Psalm 111:10
invites us to anchor our lives in the fear of the Lord and to pursue wisdom not
as the world defines it, but as God gives it. It calls us to walk in obedience,
to grow in understanding, and to join the unending chorus of praise rising to
the God whose wisdom, power, and love endure forever.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, help us
to develop an appropriate sense of fear. May we learn to respect and honor you
at all times with our words and actions. Glorify Yourself through us. Use us to
gain fame and glory for You. May we always be your humble servants who praise
your name every chance we get. In Jesus name we ask this, Amen.
