God Our Teacher

Scripture: Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

Devotion:

With these words, God does not merely offer guidance; He offers Himself. He does not simply point out a path and leave us to walk it alone. Instead, He promises instruction, teaching, counsel, and watchful care. This verse reveals a God who is intimately involved in the lives of His people, a God who leads with wisdom and watches with love.

The promise begins with instruction. God knows the way we should go, not only in the grand movements of life but in the small, hidden decisions that shape our days. His instruction is not cold or distant. It is personal, rooted in His perfect knowledge of who we are and who He is, shaping us to become. When He teaches us, He does so as a Father who delights in His children, guiding them step by step. His teaching is not meant to burden us but to free us from confusion, fear, and the weight of trying to navigate life on our own.

God then promises to counsel us. Counsel is more than information; it is wisdom applied to the complexities of real life. It is the gentle voice that steadies us when we are uncertain and the firm voice that redirects us when we wander. His counsel is always timely, always true, and always rooted in His unwavering love. He does not counsel from afar but from near, with His eye upon us. This final phrase is perhaps the most comforting of all. God watches over us not as a distant observer but as a loving guardian. His eye upon us means His attention is fixed, His care is constant, and His presence is unbroken.

Psalm 32:8 reminds us that we are never left to figure out life alone. The God who redeemed us also guides us. The God who forgave us also forms us. The God who saved us also shepherds us. When we feel uncertain, He instructs. When we feel lost, He teaches. When we feel overwhelmed, He counsels. And through it all, His eye remains upon us, steady and faithful.

This verse invites us to trust the One who knows the way, who walks with us on the way, and who keeps His loving gaze upon us every step of the way.

Prayer:

Lord God Almighty, help us always to seek instruction and counsel from you. You who created the universe and everything in it with a Word can surely be a fountain of information and guidance for us in our everyday lives. May we learn to rely on you for inspiration and help in times of need and times of plenty. Thank you for being willing to serve as our teacher and guide. In Jesus name, Amen.
