Genuine Love

Scripture: Romans 12 9-13(NIV)

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Devotion:

This passage calls the believer into a way of life that is both beautifully simple and profoundly demanding. Paul does not describe a faith that stays hidden in the heart or confined to private belief. Instead, he paints a picture of love that is active, discerning, sacrificial, and persistent. The passage begins with the command that love must be genuine. True Christian love cannot be reduced to politeness, niceness, or outward gestures that mask an indifferent heart. Genuine love is rooted in the character of God Himself, who loves with purity, truth, and unwavering faithfulness. To love genuinely means to love without pretense, without manipulation, and without self‑interest. It is a love that reflects Christ, who gave Himself fully and sincerely for His people.

Paul then calls believers to hate what is evil and cling to what is good. This pairing reminds us that Christian love is not sentimental. It is morally anchored. To love someone in Christ is to desire their holiness, their flourishing, and their alignment with God’s will. Love that tolerates sin is not love at all, for sin destroys. Love that refuses to speak truth is not love, for truth sets free. Genuine love has a backbone. It rejects what corrupts and embraces what reflects God's goodness.

The apostle continues by urging believers to love one another with brotherly affection and to outdo one another in showing honor. In a world obsessed with recognition, status, and self‑promotion, Paul calls the church to a different posture. Honor is not something we demand; it is something we give. The Christian community is meant to be a place where people are lifted up, encouraged, and valued because they bear the image of God and belong to Christ. When believers strive to honor one another, rivalry dissolves, jealousy fades, and unity grows.

Paul also commands diligence, spiritual fervor, and service to the Lord. The Christian life is not passive. It is fueled by the Spirit and directed toward the glory of God. Rejoicing in hope, being patient in tribulation, and remaining constant in prayer form the rhythm of a life anchored in Christ. Hope gives joy even in uncertainty. Patience steadies the soul in suffering. Prayer keeps the heart aligned with God’s strength rather than its own.

Finally, Paul calls believers to contribute to the needs of the saints and to pursue hospitality. Love becomes tangible when it meets needs, opens doors, and welcomes others with the warmth of Christ. Hospitality is not merely entertaining; it is making space for others in our lives, our homes, and our hearts.

Prayer:

Lord, help us to love others authentically. May we never be accused of hypocrisy or falsehood. Help us to obey you always and seek to love you, Lord, and others with our whole heart. Lead us in the way of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
