The Lord Is My Strength

Scripture: Habakkuk 3:19 (ESV)

God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s; he makes me tread on my high places.

Devotion:

Here, Habakkuk declares his confidence, spoken at the end of a book filled with questions, fear, and honest wrestling. These words do not come from a man whose circumstances have improved. They come from a prophet who has just been told that hardship, loss, and national upheaval are on the horizon. Yet Habakkuk ends not in despair but in praise. Like us, the prophet lives in turbulent times, and yet he has peace that, through God, all things will end well.

The image of God giving “the feet of a deer” is rich with meaning. In the rocky hills of the ancient Near East, deer and mountain goats were known for their ability to move with grace and stability across dangerous terrain. They could climb steep cliffs, leap across gaps, and stand firm where others would slip. Habakkuk uses this image to describe what God does for His people. He does not always remove the difficult path, but He equips us to walk it. He gives strength where we feel weak, stability where we feel uncertain, and confidence where we feel afraid. The heights in this verse are not places of ease but places of challenge—yet also places of perspective, where God lifts us above the chaos and gives us a clearer view of His faithfulness.

Habakkuk’s declaration that “the Sovereign Lord is my strength” is not a cliché; it is a confession forged in the fire of doubt and fear. Earlier in the book, he cried out in confusion, asking why God seemed silent and why injustice seemed to prevail. God’s answers did not remove every mystery, but they revealed His sovereignty, His justice, and His timing. Habakkuk learned that faith is not built on explanations but on the character of God. Strength comes not from understanding everything but from trusting the One who holds everything.

This verse invites us to consider where we are standing today. Many of us face terrain that feels steep, uncertain, or overwhelming. We may not know how to navigate the next step, let alone the entire path ahead. Habakkuk reminds us that God does not ask us to climb in our own strength. He becomes our strength. He steadies our steps. He lifts our eyes. He enables us to walk where we never thought we could.

Prayer:

Lord, you are our strength. Help us believe that if we but trust in you and your powerful Spirit, we can overcome any obstacle in our paths. Teach us to trust in you more and more as we try to live our lives following you. May our lives be lived so that they bring glory to your name at all times. Amen.
