Christ Died For Us

Scripture: Romans 5:7-8 (NIV)

Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Devotion:

These verses stand at the heart of the gospel, revealing a love so unexpected and so undeserved that it reshapes our understanding of God and ourselves. Paul invites us to consider the limits of human love in order to grasp the limitless love of God.

Human love, even at its best, is selective. We might sacrifice for someone noble, admirable, or deeply cherished. We might risk our lives for a family member, a close friend, or a person whose goodness inspires us. But Paul reminds us that such sacrifices are rare. Even the bravest acts of human devotion have boundaries. Yet God’s love does not follow the logic of human affection. He did not wait for us to become worthy, lovable, or spiritually awakened. He did not wait for us to clean ourselves up or prove our sincerity. Christ died for us while we were still sinners—still wandering, still resisting, still broken.

This is the staggering beauty of the gospel: God moved toward us as we moved away from Him. His love is not a response to our goodness; it is the cause of our transformation. Christ’s death is not merely an example of love but the ultimate demonstration of it. At the cross, God declared once and for all that His love is not fragile, conditional, or dependent on our performance. It is rooted in His own character—steadfast, pursuing, and sacrificial.

Romans 5:7–8 also speaks to the deep places of shame and doubt within us. Many believers struggle to accept that God truly loves them, especially when they see their own failures so clearly. But Paul’s words dismantle the lie that God’s love is earned. If Christ died for us at our worst, how much more will He hold us at our weakest? The cross is the permanent proof that God’s heart toward us is mercy, not reluctance.

This passage invites us to rest in a love that does not waver. It calls us to marvel at a Savior who gave Himself not for the deserving but for the desperate. And it reminds us that the love that saved us is the same love that sustains us every day.

Prayer:

We come before, O God, with humble hearts. The fact that you loved us enough to send Jesus to die on the cross for our defiance of your holy ways cannot be comprehended. Help us to return the love you have for us in some small way. We can never repay you for what you have done for us, so we do what we can and worship you to the best of our ability. Amen.
