Do Not Be Afraid

Scripture: Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)

The Lord will deliver them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Devotion:

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” These words were spoken to Israel at a moment of profound transition. Moses, the only leader they had ever known, was preparing to step aside. The wilderness years were ending, and the land of promise lay before them, but so did battles, unknown enemies, and the weight of a future they could not yet see. Into that uncertainty, God spoke a command and a promise woven together: strength rooted not in themselves, but in His unfailing presence.

Courage in Scripture is never presented as a personality trait or a natural boldness. It is the settled confidence that comes from knowing who walks beside you. Israel was not told to be strong because they were numerous or skilled. They were told to be strong because the Lord their God was with them. The command to reject fear was grounded in the character of God, not the capability of the people. That same pattern holds true for us. Our courage is not self-generated; it is God-enabled.

Life often places us in seasons that feel like Israel’s threshold moment. We stand between what has been familiar and what is coming next, and the unknown can feel overwhelming. Responsibilities shift, relationships change, and the future refuses to reveal its details. In those moments, fear whispers that we are alone, that we are not enough, that the challenges ahead will swallow us. But Deuteronomy 31:6 interrupts that whisper with a louder truth. God does not send His people into the future; He accompanies them into it.

The promise that He will not leave or forsake us is not sentimental language. It is covenant language. It is the assurance that the God who has carried us this far will not abandon us when the path becomes steep. His presence is not fragile or conditional. It is steadfast, deliberate, and anchored in His own faithfulness.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for the promise found in this verse. Steady our trust in your words found here. We confess that the circumstances we face in this world can make us very afraid. Help us to rely on your promise to always be with us. Assure us that even if we fail and grow faint on the way, you will stand ready to forgive us and strengthen us for whatever task you have for us. In Jesus mighty name, Amen.
