He Saved Us

Scripture: Titus 3:5-7 (NIV)

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

Devotion:

This scripture passage presents a picture of Christian character shaped not by cultural pressure but by God's transforming grace. Paul writes to a young pastor on the island of Crete, a place known for moral confusion and social instability. In that setting, he speaks of a life that reflects the beauty of the gospel—lives marked by integrity, self-control, and faithfulness. These verses remind us that Christian witness is not only spoken with words but demonstrated through the quiet, steady patterns of daily life.

Paul’s instruction is based on the belief that the gospel transforms people from the inside out. The grace that saves us also trains us. It teaches us to turn away from what is destructive and to embrace what is good. In Titus 2, Paul describes a community where older believers model maturity, younger believers grow in wisdom, and all believers live in ways that honor Christ. The call to be self-controlled, pure, kind, and faithful is not a burden but an invitation to reflect the character of the One who redeemed us.

When Paul is not asking for perfection but for authenticity, Titus is to live in such a way that his life reinforces his message. His teaching should be characterized by integrity, dignity, and soundness. In a world filled with empty talk and shallow promises, Paul calls for a life that rings true. The gospel is never meant to be just a theory; it is meant to be lived out.

These verses also remind us that our lives speak even when we don’t. People notice how we respond to frustration, how we treat those who cannot repay us, how we speak when no one is watching, and how we carry ourselves in seasons of difficulty. Paul’s vision is that the beauty of Christ would shine through ordinary faithfulness. When believers live with integrity, patience, and grace, the gospel becomes visible. believable, and compelling.

Prayer:

Holy God, thank you for Paul and Titus. They were a gift to your early church. May we look to them as an example of how to live our lives for you and the gospel. Help us to be authentic believers whose lives demonstrate the gospel in clear, concrete ways every day. Lord, may we be shining examples as we seek to imitate Jesus. Amen.
