That We May Save Some
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 9:22-23 (NIV)
To the weak I
became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by
all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel,
that I may share in its blessings.
Devotion:
With these words,
Paul opens a window into the heart of gospel-shaped ministry. His aim was not
self-promotion, personal comfort, or cultural influence. His aim was
people—real people, with real stories, real struggles, and real barriers to
faith. And because the gospel mattered more to him than his own preferences, he
willingly adapted his approach so that nothing in his life would hinder someone
else from seeing Christ clearly.
Paul’s words are
not about compromise but compassion. He did not change the message; he changed
his posture. He did not dilute the truth; he removed unnecessary obstacles. He
entered the world of others—Jews, Gentiles, the strong, the weak—so that he
could speak the gospel in a way they could understand. This required humility,
patience, and a willingness to lay aside his own rights. It required seeing
people not as opponents or projects but as souls deeply loved by God.
In our own lives,
this passage challenges the subtle ways we cling to comfort or familiarity. It
is easy to love people who think like us, worship like us, or live like us. It
is harder to step into the experiences of those who differ from us, to listen
before speaking, to understand before correcting, and to serve without
expecting anything in return. Yet this is the way of Christ, who entered our
world, took on our flesh, and met us where we were so that He might bring us to
God.
Paul’s motivation
is clear: “for the sake of the gospel.” He knew that the message of Christ
carries blessings beyond measure—freedom from guilt, reconciliation with God,
hope that outlasts death, and a love that transforms the heart. To share in
these blessings meant not only receiving them personally but participating in
God’s mission to extend them to others.
This passage
invites us to examine how we approach the people God has placed in our lives.
Are we willing to adjust our preferences, our pace, or our expectations so that
others might see Christ more clearly? Are we willing to love in ways that
stretch us, listen in ways that humble us, and serve in ways that cost us? When
the gospel becomes our highest treasure, we begin to see others through the
eyes of Christ—and that changes everything.
Prayer:
Lord help us to meet people where
they are. Just as Paul did not try to make people into something they were not
before sharing the gospel with them, help us to do the same. May we always be
willing to share the gospel, no matter how unlikely we are to be successful,
because we know that it is always your will to share it with others. Whether we
share the gospel through words, deeds, or both, may God be with us so that we
lead someone to Christ. Amen.
