Peace, Peace

Scripture: Jeremiah 6:14 (NIV)

They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.

Devotion:

In Jeremiah 6:14, the prophet reveals a dangerous illusion: “They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.” At first glance, these words might seem comforting, like a gentle balm over troubled times. But Jeremiah’s warning is sharp and sobering. He challenges us to face the reality of brokenness rather than covering it up with empty promises or shallow reassurances.

How often do we hear words of peace—spoken by leaders, friends, or even ourselves—without addressing the deeper wounds and unrest inside us or those around us? The tendency to downplay pain or hide conflict is strong. We seek relief, not the discomfort of honest reflection. Yet, ignoring the depth of our hurt or the seriousness of division only extends suffering and delays healing.

True peace is more than just the absence of conflict; it’s the presence of wholeness, reconciliation, and justice. Jeremiah’s words remind us that superficial solutions cannot heal spiritual or emotional wounds. God invites us to bring our brokenness into the light, not to hide it. True healing begins when we recognize our need for God’s help—when we confess, repent, and seek genuine restoration.

As you meditate on this verse, ask yourself: Are there places in your life where you have settled for “peace, peace” instead of seeking true healing? Is there someone you’ve comforted with words but failed to help in a meaningful way? God’s peace is genuine and transformative, not just a comforting phrase. Let’s reject quick fixes and open our hearts to His deeper work, trusting that His truth leads to lasting peace. Today, pray for the courage to face reality and the faith to allow God’s healing to begin.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, how often do we seek solutions to situations that call for deep healing with trite words? We are all too good at hiding or minimizing our pain. Let us seek deep healing for ourselves so that we can help others in their pain and suffering. Teach us again what it means to love our neighbor as ourselves. Let us face daily problems daily instead of allowing our anxiety and pain to overwhelm us. Glorify in each of us a desire to be at peace with you, others, and ourselves. Amen.
