I Will Not Be Shaken
Scripture:
Psalms 16:8 (NIV)
8 I
keep my eyes always on the Lord.
With him at my
right hand, I will not be shaken.
When
life’s storms rage around us, it’s easy to feel unsettled and overwhelmed. Our
minds wander to worries, anxieties, and fears about the future or the unknown.
Yet Psalm 16:8 (NIV) offers a profound declaration of hope and stability: “I
keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be
shaken.” This verse becomes a lifeline when chaos threatens to shake our world.
It reminds us that our security is not found in the shifting circumstances of
life but in the steadfast presence of God.
Keeping
our eyes “always on the Lord” requires intentionality. In a culture filled with
distractions and competing priorities, it’s easy to lose sight of God’s
presence. But David’s words urge us to make God the focus of our days — to look
to Him in every moment, whether in joy or hardship. When we center our
thoughts, our hopes, and our desires on God, we find a foundation that cannot
be swayed by trouble or uncertainty. Just as a lighthouse stands unmoved by
crashing waves, so the Lord stands with us, a constant guide and protector.
Having
God “at my right hand” is a rich image of closeness and strength. In ancient
times, the right hand symbolized honor and support. To have God at our right
hand is to live with the assurance that He is actively involved in our lives,
offering wisdom, comfort, and courage. We can face difficult decisions, relationship
tensions, or daunting challenges knowing that God stands beside us. His
presence transforms fear into faith, weakness into strength, and despair into
hope.
So
what does it mean to “not be shaken”? It does not mean that we will never face
trials or disappointments. In fact, Jesus assured us that in this world we will
have trouble (John 16:33). Yet, Psalm 16:8 promises that even when those
troubles come, we can remain steadfast. Our hearts can be still, our minds at
peace, and our souls secure because God is with us. His promises never fail,
and His love never wavers.
Today,
let Psalm 16:8 be your anchor. When worries threaten to overwhelm you, pause
and fix your eyes on the Lord. Remind yourself that He is with you, right at
your side. Pray for the faith to stand firm, knowing you are held by a God who
is greater than any storm. With Him, you truly will not be shaken.
Prayer:
Lord, keep our eyes focused on you.
The world, the flesh, and the devil will all try to distract us from our
savior. Remind us of our mission to go into the world and make disciples of all
nations. Help to serve all those around us in need or distress. May our actions
bring glory to your name and increase your power in this world. Forgive us
where we fail and lead us in the way of your cross. Amen.
