We Will Wait for the Lord

 Scripture: Psalm 33:20-24 (NIV)

20 We wait in hope for the Lord;

he is our help and our shield.

21 In him our hearts rejoice,

for we trust in his holy name.

22 May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,

even as we put our hope in you.

Devotion:

The words of Psalm 33:20-22 resonate deeply with anyone who has ever found themselves in a position of waiting, hoping, and trusting in the Lord. "We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him, our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you." These verses encapsulate a profound truth about the nature of our relationship with God and our hearts' posture as we navigate life's uncertainties.

The concept of waiting in hope is not passive resignation but an active, expectant stance. It signifies a deep trust in God's timing and His perfect plan for our lives. As we wait, we do so with the assurance that God is our help and our shield. He is not distant or indifferent; He is our protector and our provider. This assurance allows us to rejoice even while waiting because our confidence is not in the shifting circumstances of this world but in the steadfast character of God.

Verse 21 highlights the joy that fills our hearts when we place our trust in God's holy name. Trusting in God's name is more than acknowledging His identity; it is embracing the fullness of who He is - His power, faithfulness, love, and sovereignty. When we trust in His name, we align our lives with His purposes and find joy that transcends our circumstances. This joy is a testament to the peace that comes from knowing that our lives are held securely in God's hands.

The prayer in verse 22, "May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you," is a beautiful expression of dependence on God's enduring love. It reminds us that our hope in God is not misplaced because His love is unfailing. This love is not based on our performance or circumstances but on His eternal nature. As we put our hope in God, we are enveloped in His love, which sustains us through every season of waiting.

In our daily lives, these verses encourage us to cultivate a posture of hopeful waiting, joyful trust, and deep reliance on God's unfailing love. They remind us that waiting on the Lord is not a passive activity but a dynamic expression of faith. As we wait, we can confidently do so, knowing that God is our help and shield, and His love will never fail us. May we hold these truths close to our hearts and allow them to shape our relationship with God and our approach to life's uncertainties.

Prayer:

            Heavenly Father, help us all to wait patiently, hoping and praying for your return. We confess that we are not always with others and with you. Remind us constantly of the words of 2nd Peter, “But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” Let us keep these words in mind as we wait for the Lord. Amen.
